About the museum
The Tramshed stands on Dylan Thomas Square in the Marina area of Swansea. It was originally part of the former Maritime and Industrial Museum and is now run by Swansea Museum, with volunteers helping to staff it.
It tells the story of the street trams of Swansea and of the Mumbles train, which ran around the edge of Swansea Bay from the town centre to Mumbles Pier. The 1804 Mumbles line is described by the museum as the first passenger railway service in the world.
The displays include a double-decker Swansea street tram and a reconstruction of the horse-drawn Mumbles tram of 1804. Visitors can also climb inside the last surviving part of a Mumbles tram from the 1960s and go up to its top deck, although the museum notes that the mezzanine and the trams themselves are not wheelchair accessible.
