About the museum
Tigh Iain Dhonnchaidh, also known as Croft No. 6, is the crofting museum of the Isle of Eigg. It stands in Cleadale, in the heart of the island's crofting community, and was formerly the home of John Campbell. The house is described as an improved blackhouse.
The local history society, Comunn Eachdraidh Eige (the Eigg History Society), carried out essential repairs with funding from Awards for All and the Pilgrim Trust. The work allows visitors to see how a crofting family lived. The house is filled with objects and artefacts left by the family, which the society calls a time capsule, and visitors' comments show that it is especially popular with children.
The museum is part of the Cleadale Crofting Trail, a short route with three bilingual Gaelic and English information panels. The trail begins at the Cleadale cross-road, where islanders once sat and discussed crofting matters on summer evenings, passes the museum and ends further up the hill, with a view of the Cleadale crofts as they were and as they are today.
