About the museum
Mull Museum is a small independent museum in Columba Buildings on Main Street in Tobermory. The building is said to have been the village bakery, and a display in a back room shows a baker loading one of the original ovens.
The museum is staffed entirely by volunteers and is a registered Scottish charity. It is an accredited museum and a member of Museums Galleries Scotland. It depends on membership and donations, and admission is free.
Its displays, which change from time to time, tell the story of the Isle of Mull from earliest times. Topics include the island's geology and prehistory, standing stones, duns and brochs, the Celtic Church and the Vikings, the castles that guard the Sound of Mull, the Tobermory Galleon, the fishing industry that led to the founding of Tobermory, crofting, emigration, schooling and the Second World War naval base. A Douglas Dakota that crashed on Ben Talla in 1945 is represented by a part on display.
The museum also keeps a library and an archive of documents and photographs, which can be used by appointment.
