About the museum
Tregaron Heritage Centre, which was formerly called the Red Kite Centre and Museum, is housed in the town’s old Victorian church school. Volunteers who speak Welsh and English welcome visitors, and a tea room serves homemade Welsh cakes, tea and coffee.
A reconstructed Victorian classroom shows pupils’ desks, a teacher’s desk, blackboard, slates and slate pencils, a Welsh Not and a cane, and a reminder of how children were once punished for speaking Welsh at school. Video exhibits and displays on the history of Tregaron, one of the oldest market towns in Wales, with a royal charter from 1292, complete the picture. The centre also acts as an information point for the Cors Caron nature reserve, with exhibits on its history, environment and restoration.
Red kites survived around Tregaron for decades after they had almost died out in the rest of Britain, and the community helped bring them back. The end wall of the building carries the artwork From Persecution to Celebration by Ted Harrison, in which swooping red kites form the shape of the Dove of St David.
