Ullapool Museum

Local history museum in a former Telford-designed parliamentary church in the Highland fishing port of Ullapool.

Opening hoursAdmission £6.50 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

Ullapool Museum occupies a church built in 1829 to a design by Thomas Telford as one of the parliamentary churches of the Highlands. Worshippers used it until 1935, when the congregation moved to a new church on Mill Street; the last service held in the old building was a wedding.

The Ullapool Museum Trust was formed in 1991 to collect, protect and promote the history and heritage of the Lochbroom area. The Church of Scotland offered the listed building to the Trust for a symbolic £1. The Trust restored it, and it opened as the village museum in December 1995.

The displays cover local life, the maritime and fishing history of the area and Gaelic culture. The collection was partly redisplayed in 2017, and staff and volunteers continue to document and conserve it and to record oral histories. The museum has full accredited status with Museums and Galleries Scotland and is run as a charity by the Trust, with the help of many volunteers. Community projects include Lost Inverlael and History At Home, and there is an archive reading area and a genealogy service for researchers.
