About the museum
The museum began in 1852 as the Museum of Manufactures, set up after the Great Exhibition of 1851 to improve the design of British goods by giving students and manufacturers examples of fine craftsmanship. It moved to its present area of South Kensington in 1857 and grew rapidly through purchases, gifts and loans from around the world.
In 1899 Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of a new building, and the museum was renamed the Victoria and Albert Museum in memory of her and her husband. The large building designed by Sir Aston Webb opened in 1909 and still forms the main frontage on Cromwell Road.
The collection now covers around 5,000 years of art and design from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and beyond, including ceramics, textiles, furniture, fashion, sculpture, jewellery, photographs and theatre. The Cast Courts hold plaster copies of famous monuments, and the John Madejski Garden is a courtyard at the centre of the building.
The Exhibition Road Quarter, opened in 2017, added a new entrance, a courtyard and underground exhibition space. Entry to the permanent collection is free.
