About the museum
Warminster Museum, formerly known as the Dewey Museum, is run by the Warminster Museum and History Society. In 1973 the society took over the care of artefacts that the Town Council had held for the people of Warminster, and the museum opened in the sexton’s cottage behind the Chapel of St Lawrence. In 1982 it moved into the new public library building, where it still has a display area, a storeroom and offices.
The collection includes the local fossil collection of Victor Manley and the documents of Harold Dewey, as well as other items from the Town Council. Only part of the collection is on show at any time. Displays change regularly and often mark events in local and national history, and objects in the storeroom can be studied by arrangement with the staff. The society pays for displays and conservation, and its members do all the work.
