About the museum
Mere Museum was founded in 1970. The idea is said to have arisen at a parish council meeting around 1967 or 1968, when the council was discussing a new county library in a vacant school building in Church Street. The museum is run by an honorary curator and volunteers and is housed on Barton Lane in Mere.
Its collection now numbers nearly 9,000 items covering the history of the town and its surroundings. Themes include science and technology, personalities, toys and hobbies, sport, trade and commerce, war, photography, religion and social history. The museum is known for its photographic archive of old local pictures, with volumes of historic photographs that visitors can look through. A detailed pictorial map of Mere is on permanent display, and displays change every few months.
