About the museum
Woolpit and District Museum began in the 1980s. The Woolpit History Group carried out field-walking across the parish and, over several years, confirmed three Roman and eight medieval sites. In 1983 the parish council asked whether the group’s finds could be shown to the public, and a store-room on the upper floor of the Woolpit Institute was made available, which became the museum.
The museum occupies the upper floor of an early sixteenth-century cottage in the centre of the village, entered through the Institute. Its permanent displays cover the local brickworks, with a model of the works, and a Victorian kitchen furnished with a range and utensils. A larger display explores the medieval legend of the Green Children of Woolpit, and another looks at the wolf shown on the village sign.
Other exhibits include photographs of the village from the early twentieth century, the finds from the 1980s field-walking, and biographies of local men killed in the two world wars. A small shop sells postcards, booklets and souvenirs.
