About the museum
Yate & District Heritage Centre was created in 1995 to display aspects of the history of Yate and to provide archive and research facilities for artefacts, documents, maps and photographs about the town. In 2000 it moved to a new site next to St Mary's Church, on the former stables dating from the 1840s behind the historic White Lion pub. Yate Town Council paid for the purpose-built exhibition galleries and a workroom that houses the archive and stores collections.
The centre is a fully accredited museum and is part of Yate Town Council. It holds more than 3,000 objects, including a permanent collection of significant local artefacts, photographs, maps and oral history recordings. Its collections include the Creda Archive, linked to the Parnall industrial site, and the Harries collection of Newman photographs.
Since 2000 the centre has staged regularly changing displays on the industrial, archaeological and community history of the area, many made with local people and school children. Local groups also use the galleries to show art, craft and photography. The centre offers a free educational service for local schools, runs museum talks and relies on volunteers.
