Lemwerder, Germany, 29 October 2026 – MuseumsAtlas, the independent museum guide behind museumsatlas.com, turns every museum visit into an entry in your own passport: with the new museum passport, users get a stamp for every museum they have been to. The passport is available now on the website and in the app for iPhone and Android – free of charge, with no ads and no subscription.
Unlike collector passes run by individual cities, regions or museum networks, the museum passport works internationally. Stamps can be collected at any of the almost 28,000 museums in 20 countries listed in MuseumsAtlas – from small local history museums to the Louvre, from the Rijksmuseum to the Prado. With every new country added to the atlas, the passport grows too.
“Many people visit countless museums, on their travels and in everyday life, but hardly anyone keeps track of where they have been. The museum passport is a personal travel diary for museums – whether you are exploring the next town or travelling right across Europe,” says Christoph Hein, founder of MuseumsAtlas.
A stamp for every museum
Stamps are collected on site: at the museum, visitors simply scan the museum’s QR code with their phone camera – the app then asks whether to check in, and the stamp goes into the passport with the museum’s name, location and date. Where there is no poster, the app can offer the stamp as soon as you are standing in front of the museum. Every museum has its own stamp, and every day of a visit earns a new one. Museums create the QR code poster themselves, free of charge, on museumsatlas.com.
Ten levels from “First Step” to “Museum Legend”
Every museum takes you up a level: ten levels lead from “First Step” after the first museum, via “Explorer” and “Museum Buff”, to “Museum Legend” at 150 museums. Each level reached appears as a badge. The passport itself can be leafed through like a real passport, and it shows the countries and cities you have visited and all your museums on a map.
Free, with one account on all your devices
All you need is a free MuseumsAtlas account, created with your email address – no password required. The passport is then the same on the website and in the app, and your stamps are available on all your devices. Anyone who wants to look around first can view a sample passport.
The website and app are available in 13 languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.
