Bundsbæk Mølle
Listed, still-working water mill near Skjern with miller's rooms, smithy and nature park, looked after by volunteers.
Over het museum
The estate owner Henrik Lange of Dejbjerglund had the mill built around 1640. In the 18th century, farmers from the surrounding parishes brought their grain here to be ground. After the Danish state bankruptcy of 1813, poor relief was distributed at the mill, including to the Rakkere who lived on Dejbjerg Hede.
In the 19th century the mill farmstead burned down and was rebuilt; it was finished in 1843. During the First World War, the miller Andreas Jensen sold bone meal that was used in reclaiming the heath. Later he installed a dynamo and supplied the neighbors with electricity until 1948.
In 1975 the then Skjern Museum took over the site, and in 1977 the main building was placed under heritage protection. The residence, mill wing, wash house and bake oven were restored and exhibition buildings were erected; the mill wheel has turned again since 1978. Bundsbæk Mølle is the only working water mill on the west coast between Varde and Struer.
Today the mill belongs to Ringkøbing Fjord Museer and is opened by the association Bundsbæk Mølles Venner. A path through the nature park leads to the reconstructed Rakkerhus, where Mette Mus and Niels Kvembjerg lived until 1932, who are regarded as the last Rakkere of Jutland.
