Ringkøbing Museum
Cultural history museum in Ringkøbing focusing on the Second World War in West Jutland, with a Lancaster replica and an Atlantic Wall exhibition.
Over het museum
Ringkøbing Museum goes back to a museum association founded in 1908 by citizens of the town to collect the history of the trading town of Ringkøbing. The collection was first stored in an attic of the town school until the association acquired the villa of the late district physician Melchiorsen on Herningvej, had it converted and extended. The museum opened there in November 1922; later the former judge's office and an extension with exhibition rooms and a storage room in the basement were added.
After the Danish municipal reform of 2007, the museum became part of a joint museum group that today operates ten visitor sites around Ringkøbing Fjord as Ringkøbing Fjord Museer. Ringkøbing Museum is the oldest department within it.
In terms of content, the permanent exhibitions focus on the Second World War on the west coast: one section introduces the construction of the Atlantic Wall, whose concrete bunkers are considered the largest construction project in Danish history. The exhibition “Flyvere i natten” tells of the Allied bombers that flew over West Jutland in 1943–45 – 19 of them crashed around Ringkøbing Fjord. The museum also shows changing exhibitions on city and regional history. Since 2021, the town's reunification stone has stood in the museum garden; its capstone was finally put in place after decades of dispute over the inscription.
