Over het museum

Neustadt an der Weinstraße has a special Bible tradition: from 1579, Bibles were printed here in the orbit of the Reformed college Casimirianum, and in 1915 the Pfälzischer Bibelverein, the Bible society of the Protestant Church of the Palatinate, was founded in the city. In the Bibelhaus on Stiftstraße, set up in 1991 and also home to the Religionspädagogisches Zentrum of the regional church, theologian Michael Landgraf began building up an interactive museum in 1999. The association is still the operator today, and Landgraf directs the house as director.

The museum is divided into three areas. Bible Archaeology shows oil lamps, clay vessels, jewelry, tools and writing materials from the land of the Bible as well as models of a tent, house and temple; millstones, instruments and writing implements may be tried out. The Lernstraße Bibelwelt (Bible World learning trail) invites especially children and teens to participate with a storytelling tent, costumes, a medieval scriptorium, a replica of the Gutenberg printing press, listening stations and Bible games.

The Schatzkammer (treasury) holds manuscripts from the 11th century onward, early printed books such as the Koberger Bible of 1483, Luther's last edition revised by himself from 1545, and the Bibles printed in Neustadt, including a deluxe edition from 1594 acquired in 2019. With about 600 copies, the museum also owns one of the largest collections of children's Bibles in Germany.
