Südsee-Sammlung Obergünzburg
New museum building in Obergünzburg with the Oceania collection of the Allgäu captain Karl Nauer from German New Guinea and a dwelling hut from Vanuatu.
Over het museum
The foundation of the Südsee-Sammlung (South Seas Collection) comes from Karl Nauer (1874–1962), a soap boiler's son from Obergünzburg who went to sea and between 1903 and 1913, as a captain of the Norddeutscher Lloyd with the steamer "Sumatra," sailed the islands of the Bismarck Archipelago in what was then German New Guinea. He made contacts with ethnological museums and himself assembled an extensive collection, which he donated to his home community in 1913.
The objects first moved through various rooms of the local girls' school, from 1922 into its converted attic, and later into the neighboring parish barn from the 18th century, which eventually had to be cleared. In 2002 the municipal council decided to dedicate a building of its own to the colonial-era collection. The cubic new building with a green roof, whose colors deliberately allude to the South Seas cultures, opened in May 2009; for the occasion, four guests from Melanesia built a traditional dwelling of the Kastom people from the island of Pentecost (Vanuatu) in the museum.
The collection comprises everyday and ritual objects mainly from Melanesia and Micronesia – from obsidian weapons of the Admiralty Islands and ancestor figures from New Ireland to an initiation hat from the northern Solomon Islands – as well as around 400 glass plate negatives by Nauer. The museum takes a critical look at the colonial origins of the objects. In the neighboring former parsonage, the Historisches Museum Obergünzburg shows local and regional history.
