Over het museum

The study centre was conceived in the early 1970s by Marie Michelet, widow of Edmond Michelet, and by the association of the Compagnons de la Fraternité Edmond-Michelet. The family home on rue Champanatier, bought by the couple in 1929, was transferred to the association so that, together with the City of Brive, it could create a place devoted to the study of the Second World War, the Resistance and deportation. It was inaugurated on May 8, 1976.

The project aimed to differ from a static memorial: the permanent exhibition was to coexist with a space for study and reflection, hence the name “centre d'études” (study centre). During the war, the house had served as a meeting place and refuge for Resistance fighters and German opponents of Nazism. A plaque at the entrance commemorates Edmond Michelet's fellow fighters, who came and went without seeing the Liberation.

Edmond Michelet (1899–1970), a member of the Combat movement, was deported to Dachau and became a minister and statesman after the war. The museum is now a public institution of the City of Brive. It holds an important collection of propaganda posters and archives, and houses a documentation center. The house has held the “Maison des illustres” label since November 2013.
