Over het museum
The museum is housed on the third floor of the Palais de la Raymondie, a large medieval building in the heart of Martel, a former town of the viscounty of Turenne. It was founded in 1931 by the town council, the tourist office and Antoine Laurent-Bruzy, who was then excavating the Fontaine de Loulié at the Puy d’Issolud. The museum was to receive the objects found during these excavations, which closely ties it to the site of Uxellodunum, where Caesar fought the last battle of the Gallic War in 51 BCE.
The collections have grown since then, and the museum has also become a museum of local history. The route has three rooms, devoted to prehistory, to Antiquity, and to the Middle Ages and early modern times, with videos and commentary. Visitors can see knapped flints, arrowheads and objects from the Palaeolithic to the Gallo-Roman period, as well as pieces linked to the history of Martel, such as seals of the town, apothecary jars and objects connected with the salt trade.
A neighboring excavation store holds finds from across the northern Lot and allows archaeologists and researchers to study them. Since 2015 the museum has been opened by the association Les Amis du Musée de la Raymondie, which also organizes exhibitions, lectures and school outreach. The museum holds the Musée de France label.
