Over het museum
The Centre historique minier occupies the former Delloye pit, which produced coal from 1931 to 1971. The last extraction shaft in the Nord-Pas de Calais closed on December 21, 1990, ending almost three centuries of mining that had begun at Anzin in 1720.
From the 1970s, the Houillères du Bassin du Nord et du Pas-de-Calais wanted to create a historic centre to keep the memory of this activity alive. The project was approved in 1973, and the Delloye pit was chosen for its representative interwar character, its central location in the basin and its proximity to the motorway network. The Association du Centre Historique Minier was founded in 1982, and the museum opened to the public in May 1984. Since 2016 it has been a public cultural cooperation institution (établissement public de coopération culturelle).
The 8-hectare site presents the pit’s original buildings, machinery, reconstructions of 1930s offices and several exhibitions: the formation of coal, the three ages of mining and life in the mining town. A one-hour guided tour leads through reconstructed galleries. A digital experience, “Paroles de mineurs”, lets visitors ask questions to former miners, who answer on video thanks to artificial intelligence.
