Over het museum
The museum has occupied the former Carthusian monastery of Douai since 1958. The core of the site is a town mansion built in two phases, in 1559 and around 1608. The Premonstratensians acquired it in 1620 and sold it to the Carthusians in 1662. The monks then built a small and a large cloister, a refectory, a chapter house and a classical-style chapel completed in 1722.
After the monks left in 1791, the buildings were used as a cartridge factory and then as a munitions depot until 1940. Listed as a historic monument in 1930, the complex was badly damaged by the bombing of August 1944, which also destroyed the former town museum. The City of Douai bought the monastery in 1951 to house the rescued collections; the museum partially opened on May 3, 1958.
The refectory, chapter house and chapel were restored over the decades, and monastic gardens were created in 2015. The collections include Flemish Primitives, Italian and Northern paintings, nearly 4,000 ceramics, a relief model of the city of Douai and works from the 19th and 20th centuries.
