Over het museum
Originally, Versailles was just a hunting lodge built for Louis XIII in the 1620s. His son Louis XIV had it enlarged from 1661 by the architects Le Vau and then Jules Hardouin-Mansart, with gardens designed by André Le Nôtre. In 1682 the court and government settled there permanently, and the estate remained the centre of royal power until the Revolution.
The château includes the Grands Appartements of the King and the Queen, the Galerie des Glaces, the Chapelle royale and the Opéra royal. In the park lie the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon and the Hameau de la Reine, more intimate places linked to Louis XIV, Louis XV and Marie-Antoinette. After 1789 part of the furnishings was removed; the palace was saved from neglect by Louis-Philippe, who had a museum devoted to French history installed there in 1837.
Today the estate is a public institution that manages the château, the gardens, the park and the Trianon palaces. The Treaty of Versailles was signed in the Galerie des Glaces in 1919. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and receives several million visitors a year.
