About the museum
In 1874, Ivan Tourguéniev and Pauline Viardot bought part of an estate that had belonged to Joséphine de Beauharnais and named it the Domaine des Frênes. The Viardots already lived in a neoclassical villa; the writer had a chalet built a little further up the hill, known as the “datcha”. He spent the last years of his life there, from spring to autumn, and died there on September 3, 1883.
The museum was founded in 1983 by the Association of Friends of Ivan Tourguéniev, Pauline Viardot and Maria Malibran, which had been set up in 1977. It has held the Maison des Illustres label since 2023. In February 2026, the association gave its collections to the City of Bougival after more than forty years of managing the site.
On the first floor, the former dining room evokes the writer's Russian roots, his struggle against serfdom and the death penalty, and his correspondence with Zola, Maupassant and Dumas. The large salon recalls his friendship with Pauline and Louis Viardot and their circle of artists; it houses a piano listed as a historic monument in 1990. Upstairs, the study retains the original library, and a reconstructed bedroom opens onto a balcony overlooking the Villa Viardot.
