Over het museum
The idea of an ecomuseum in Fresnes was born in 1976, when mayor André Villette wanted to convert the Cottinville farm into a cultural and social centre. The museologist Georges-Henri Rivière supported the project and proposed entrusting its direction to the ethnologist Françoise Wasserman. In 1979 the town bought the farm and launched the works; the ecomuseum opened a resource centre on local history and began collecting heritage.
The main venue opened in 1984. Its programme draws on the human sciences, tangible and intangible heritage, the Paris suburbs and contemporary art, with photography exhibitions and themes that give a voice to the “forgotten of history”.
In 2006 the ecomuseum was attached to the Val de Bièvre urban community, and ten years later to Grand-Orly Seine Bièvre, widening its scope to neighbouring communes. It has two temporary exhibition rooms and a documentation centre.
