Over het museum
Le Féru des sciences is the former museum of iron history. It was conceived by Édouard Salin, Albert France-Lanord and Bertrand Gille as a laboratory-museum, attached to the Research Centre for the History of the Iron and Steel Industry. The project grew out of an international colloquium on iron through the ages, held in October 1955 with the support of the city of Nancy.
The building was constructed in 1962 on the Montaigu estate, which belonged to Édouard Salin, and the museum opened in 1966 in Jarville-la-Malgrange, a town with an iron and steel past. Today it is run by the Métropole du Grand Nancy and presents itself as a centre of scientific culture for families.
The iron gallery traces the techniques for extracting and processing iron, first by hand and then industrially, with artworks, models, scientific illustrations and photographs on the social side of the steel industry. The hands-on space offers four large devices to manipulate and many science challenges from age 6.
