Over het museum
70.8 takes its name from the share of the planet’s surface covered by the ocean, 70.8%. The museum explains the vital role of the ocean for climate, water, resources and the economy, and shows the current and future challenges linked to it.
It is the result of Brest métropole’s wish to create a new space for scientific, technical and industrial culture devoted to the marine environment. Brest is a major centre of maritime research and innovation, with numerous laboratories, universities and companies; the museum draws on the data and work of these partners.
Housed in an emblematic building of the Ateliers des Capucins, it offers a visit of about an hour and a half over three levels. The circuit, with 45 multimedia displays and 30 models, is organised around three themes: the ocean as a resource space, the ocean to understand, measure and forecast, and the ocean as a space for navigation.
