Tijdelijk gesloten. The museum has been closed to the public since April 2025 because of a major collections project linked to the construction of the planned conservation centre (pôle de conservation), scheduled for 2029. No reopening date has been announced; the team continues its work and publishes information on the website and on social media.

Over het museum

The museum opened in 1877 in the Halle aux blés, thanks to gifts from marine painters, purchases by the city and deposits from the state. Part of the collections was moved to the Château de Penmarc'h at the end of 1939, but most of the works were destroyed in the fire that followed the bombing of the night of July 4–5, 1941.

After the war, a new museum was planned; from 1959 it took on an ethnographic focus with a collection of bagpipes. Inaugurated in 1968, the current building made it possible to rebuild the fine-arts collections, particularly painting, notably thanks to war damage compensation funds. An exhibition at the Louvre devoted to this revival showcased the collection in 1974.

The circuit focuses on marine painting, paintings with Breton inspiration, history and Orientalist painting, Symbolism, the Pont-Aven school and the Nabis, as well as a modern section devoted to abstraction. The museum closed to the public in April 2025 for a major collections project.
