Over het museum

The Dominican monastery of Langeac was officially founded on September 24, 1623, after the Marquis de Langeac laid the foundation stone in 1621. In 1792, the nuns were driven out and the building became a hospice. Two sisters returned in 1805, the community was re-established in 1822, and in 1840 a new monastery was built on the banks of the Allier. Mother Agnès, a Dominican who lived there, was beatified in 1994.

The Historial was inaugurated on October 3, 2010 by the Bishop of Le Puy-en-Velay, with museography designed by Gérard Fustier. Housed in the former convent, it presents an important museum of sacred art, with embroidery and lace, and a collection of liturgical vestments from the 18th to the 20th century: chasubles, stoles, chalice veils and corporal bursas in embroidered gold, velvet or satin cloth.

The museum also displays Aubusson tapestries classified as historic monuments, paintings, a reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, a reconstruction of the parlour of Mother Agnès and of Monsieur Olier, founder of the Sulpicians, and illuminations from the 15th-century book of hours commissioned by Jacques de Langheac.
