Over het museum
The Consortium was born in Dijon in 1977 on the first floor of an alternative bookshop, on the initiative of two young academics, Xavier Douroux and Franck Gautherot, who wanted to show the art of their time. It then moved into a former shop at the back of a courtyard near the market square.
From the 1970s and 1980s the venue presented avant-garde artists, among them Christian Boltanski, Annette Messager, Cindy Sherman, Daniel Buren, Carl Andre and Hans Haacke. In the 1990s and 2000s it supported new generations of artists, and in 2000 it organized a major retrospective of Yayoi Kusama. In 2001 it was also responsible for the French pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
Since 2011 the Consortium has occupied a building transformed by the Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. Its collection numbers just over 500 works, mostly gifts from artists who have exhibited at the Consortium; it is permanently displayed on the first floor and includes works by On Kawara, Cady Noland, Dan Graham and Louise Lawler. The Consortium is also linked to the publishing house Les Presses du réel and the production company Anna Sanders Films.
