Over het museum

Le Cyclop is a monumental sculpture 22.5 meters high, made of about 350 tonnes of steel and covered in mirrors. Jean Tinguely began it in 1969 in the forest of Milly-la-Forêt, together with his wife Niki de Saint Phalle and artist friends such as Bernhard Luginbühl, Rico Weber and Daniel Spoerri. No architect took part: the artists built it themselves.

Tinguely and Saint Phalle gave the work to the French state in 1987. In 1988, the Ministry of Culture entrusted its management to the association Le Cyclop, which looks after upkeep, tours and promotion of the site. After Tinguely’s death in 1991, Niki de Saint Phalle completed the sculpture. It was inaugurated in May 1994 and opened to the public.

Inside, a labyrinth leads to sound sculptures, a small automatic theatre and a machinery of scrap-metal gears. Water flows from the mouth of the head down a tongue-shaped slide.
