Over het museum

The Milly-la-Forêt house was one of the outbuildings of the Château de la Bonde, whose origins go back to the 13th century. Built in local stone in the 17th century, it is surrounded by a garden crossed by moats.

Jean Cocteau and Jean Marais discovered the property in 1946, after filming La Belle et la Bête, and bought it. The poet lived and worked there from 1947 until his death in 1963; Madeleine Castaing helped him decorate the interiors. His adopted son Édouard Dermit inherited it and kept the rooms intact. On Dermit’s death in 1995, the house passed to his two sons.

In 2002, an association acquired the site on the initiative of Pierre Bergé, with the support of the local authorities. Restoration work, financed by Pierre Bergé, took place from 2005 to 2010; the house then opened to the public and received the Maisons des Illustres label. After Pierre Bergé’s death, the Île-de-France Region took over the site. In 2019 it set up, together with the Essonne department, the commune, the regional tourism committee and the Centre Pompidou, a public interest group (GIP) to manage it. The same year, numerous drawings kept on site joined the national collections of the Musée national d’art moderne. The third-floor studio is not open to visitors.
