Over het museum
In June 1857, George Sand discovered the village of Gargilesse in the Creuse valley with her companion, the engraver Alexandre Manceau. She immediately wished to have a cottage there. A month later, Manceau bought a small dry-stone house with a tiled roof for her, set somewhat apart from the road and below the château.
After a few months of work, the house was ready in January 1858. It was named “Algira” after a butterfly discovered during a walk. George Sand stayed there several times for short periods. She wrote there, but also devoted time to mineralogy and plants. After Manceau’s death in 1865, the house passed to Maurice, the writer’s son, who sold it in 1878, two years after his mother’s death.
The house was redeveloped in 1958 on the advice of Aurore Sand, George Sand’s granddaughter, and then opened to the public. Today it presents documents and mementos kept by Christiane Sand: portraits, personal objects, the tiny room where George Sand wrote, and a room devoted to the interests of her son Maurice, such as insects, minerals and puppets.
