Over het museum
The Maison des arts et traditions populaires du Berry occupies former stables of the Balsan mill, a company that specialized in woolen cloth and textile flooring. The company left the site in the 1980s. The stables, located in the Parc Balsan at the entrance to a large park and not far from the Château du Parc, were restored and have housed the museum since it opened in 1992.
The museum is devoted to the daily life and customs of the people of the Berry at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It holds a collection of traditional costumes and headdresses, assembled by Pierre and Renée Panis, as well as everyday objects, craftsmen’s tools and agricultural implements.
The building also houses the headquarters of two associations that study the arts and customs of the Berry: a music and dance association and a group of musicians. The museum is part of the Châteauroux museums.
