Over het museum
The Maison de Payrac, more precisely the “Sagne du Besset”, dates from 1822. It stands at around 850 meters above sea level in a forested massif in the east of the Tarn department, near the Lac du Laouzas. Its name comes from its first inhabitants, the Sompayrac family.
It is a two-level livestock farm: sheep and cows lived on the ground floor, and their warmth rose to the upper floor, where the family ate, slept and worked. Neighboring buildings housed the bread oven, the henhouse, the 1841 cowshed and the hay barn.
The farm was abandoned in 1920, then restored in 2003 to become an open-air museum devoted to rural mountain life. It has kept its stones, its six stone vaults, its local slate roofs and its woodwork. Regular demonstrations, often run by volunteers, bring back old gestures: woodworking, harvesting, bread baking, sheep shearing and wool processing.
