Over het museum

The museum grew out of a temporary exhibition organised in 1989 by the cultural committee of the Lacaune tourist office. The success of this initiative led to the creation of a permanent venue. The association in charge of historical research, heritage conservation and promotion of the museum was founded on May 21, 1992. Volunteers cleared and restored the rooms of a municipal building on the place du Griffoul, part of which dates from the 16th century, opposite the Fontaine des Pisseurs, a listed monument.

The route has fourteen rooms showing everyday life in Lacaune since the 18th century: agricultural and forestry tools, traditional costumes and headdresses, a kitchen with its large range, a classroom from 1880, an alcove bedroom, a reconstructed forge and a former shopping street. From 1885 to 1970 the building was occupied by a religious congregation that ran a school and a boarding school for girls. Other rooms evoke the spinning and weaving of wool, as well as the social life around the Lacaune-les-Bains spa.

Two rooms are devoted to the story of the wild child, captured in the woods of the region in 1798. One room has been dedicated to the Resistance in the nearby maquis since 2013, and two others, opened in September 2021, recall the house arrest of Jewish families in Lacaune during the Second World War. The museum has announced a change of name to become “Mémoires Lacaunaises : Musée histoire et traditions”.
