Over het museum
The Maison La Roche was built from 1923 to 1925 by Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret for Raoul La Roche, a Swiss banker based in Paris and collector of modern art. It houses his collection of Cubist and Purist paintings and, together with the neighbouring house for the Jeanneret family, forms a pair of villas in the Auteuil district of Paris.
The house separates a part reserved for the painting gallery from a residential part. It illustrates the “five points” of the new architecture that Le Corbusier formulated shortly afterwards, and it allowed him to develop the idea of the architectural promenade: visitors discover the spaces by moving through them, from the double-height hall to the gallery and on to the library, reached by a curved ramp.
The La Roche and Jeanneret houses underwent several restoration campaigns from the 1970s onwards. The complex was listed as a historic monument in 1996 and is occupied by the Fondation Le Corbusier. Since 2016, the house has been one of the seventeen works by Le Corbusier inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
