Over het museum

The museum is housed in a 19th-century townhouse near the Jardin du Ranelagh in Paris. Jules Marmottan, an industrialist and art lover, bought the property in 1882 and gathered there paintings of the early Italian masters, statuettes and tapestries. After his death in 1883, his son Paul Marmottan inherited it. An art historian specialising in the Consulate and the Empire, he enriched the collections with Empire-style furniture, sculptures and paintings, including Napoleon I’s bed.

Paul Marmottan bequeathed the house and its collections to the Académie des beaux-arts, which inherited them on his death on March 15, 1932. The Musée Marmottan opened to the public on June 21, 1934. The Academy’s first gifts concerned early 19th-century art; from 1938 onwards, the second half of the century was added, with gifts from Victorine and Eugène Donop de Monchy that gradually steered the museum towards Impressionism.

Today the museum holds the largest collection of works by Claude Monet in the world, bequeathed by the painter’s family. It comprises around a hundred masterpieces, including Impression, Sunrise, views of Rouen Cathedral and a group of Nymphéas. The museum also presents an important ensemble of works by Berthe Morisot, as well as works by Gauguin, Renoir and Caillebotte, and the Empire salons of Paul Marmottan. It is part of the foundations of the Académie des beaux-arts.
