Over het museum
Pierre-Jakez Hélias, a man of letters, journalist and folklorist of the Breton and French languages, was born on February 17, 1914 in Pouldreuzic, where he spent his childhood. He died in Quimper on August 13, 1995. His book “Le Cheval d'orgueil”, published in 1975, describes through the history of his family the everyday life of a rural world in the Pays bigouden. It was adapted into a comic book by Bertrand Galic and Marc Lizano.
The writer gave the house where he was born to the commune in 1992, a few years before his death. This small house, typical of the Pays bigouden, has kept part of the Hélias family's furniture; other pieces have been gathered to recreate, as faithfully as possible, the interior of a peasant family.
The museum display now immerses visitors in an early-20th-century Bigouden interior, as the book describes it: box bed, studded wardrobe, hearth, bilig, jar and cradle with embroidered linen. Sound recordings, videos, photographs and writings evoke the atmospheres that shaped the writer, in particular the strong oral tradition passed on by his mother and by his grandfather, a storyteller.
