Over het museum

The Port-musée de Douarnenez grew out of the efforts of a group of local residents who, from the 1970s onward, wanted to save the maritime heritage of France’s coasts. Their association, Treizour (“the ferryman” in Breton), assembled a large collection of old hulls, published the maritime ethnology journal Le Chasse-marée and founded a regional federation for maritime culture and heritage. The museum opened in May 1993.

It occupies a former cannery on the bank of the Port-Rhu ria, near the Île Tristan. More than 2,800 m² of permanent and temporary exhibitions are devoted to boats, the skills of sailors and shipwrights, and the history of sardine canneries. Classified as a “Musée de France”, it presents itself as the most maritime of France’s museums.

The collection includes around ten thousand objects related to the sea, photographic holdings by Breton photographers (Michel Thersiquel, Félix and Nicole Le Garrec), and more than 280 boats of all sizes and origins, from the African pirogue to a factory ship over thirty metres long. Some of these vessels, restored in full view of the public by the museum’s own shipwrights, can be visited afloat from the jetties and pontoons.
