Over het museum
The Mémorial Pegasus was inaugurated on June 4, 2000 by Prince Charles. It honours the action of the British 6th Airborne Division during the Battle of Normandy, from June to September 1944, and in particular the missions flown in the night before the D-Day landings of June 6. The museum was built in a matter of months under the auspices of the Comité du Débarquement.
The route presents several hundred objects and photographs, mementoes of the liberation of the region. In the park, visitors can see the original Bénouville bridge, renamed the Pegasus Bridge, as well as a Bailey bridge, a half-track, guns and a full-size replica of the Horsa glider, inaugurated in 2004. In 2009, six monuments bearing the names of the soldiers of the six gliders commanded by Major Howard were unveiled.
The collections have grown over the years, for example with the restoration of a Centaur tank in 2014, a Bren Carrier in 2023 and a Eureka beacon in 2024. The museum closed its doors on September 1, 2026 for a major extension and renovation project. The new building is to offer a new display concept, new learning spaces and a temporary exhibition room; reopening is announced for June 2027.
