Over het museum

The Musée de Normandie opened in 1963 within the grounds of the Château de Caen. The city wanted to turn this medieval site, which overlooks the town, into a major centre for the heritage and history of Normandy. The Musée des Beaux-Arts joined it in 1970. The castle had been a residence of the Dukes of Normandy, then a royal fortress and a barracks, before becoming a complex of museums.

The permanent collections occupy the rooms of the former Logis des Gouverneurs. This museum of history and society holds important archaeology and ethnography collections. It shows the lives of people across Normandy, from prehistory through the great migrations of the early Middle Ages to the changes in rural life and the first upheavals of industrialisation.

Temporary exhibitions are shown in the Salles du Rempart, among archaeological remains. The reception and ticket office for the castle and museums are in the welcome pavilion. Visitors can also explore the Salle de l’Échiquier, the church of Saint-Georges, the keep and the wall walk.
