Over het museum
The Morbihan Aéro Musée is run by the MAM association, founded on May 23, 2014 and based at Monterblanc town hall. It preserves, restores and presents the aviation heritage linked to Vannes airfield and to the history of flight in Brittany. The museum is housed in historic hangars at Vannes-Meucon airfield.
The aviation history of Vannes begins in 1909 and takes a decisive turn with the arrival of the Americans in 1917. Between the two world wars, popular flying developed. From 1940 to 1944 the site was turned into a military base by the Germans, who had hangars built there to house the Heinkel He 111 bombers intended for raids on England. Only six remain today, all in the northwest of the site, which the museum describes as the only surviving hangars of this type in Europe. Hangar No. 2 was listed as a historic monument on December 30, 2024 and then restored with the help of several public partners.
The museum occupies three hangars. Hangar 2 tells the story of the airfield and of local aviation from 1909 to the present day, through panels, models and videos. Hangar 3 is devoted to space exploration up to Apollo 11, with large rocket and space station models. Hangar 4 displays aircraft, including a Noratlas and a Transall C-160 that can be visited from the inside, as well as a Fouga Magister, a T-33, an Étendard IV, a Sikorsky H-34 and an F-4 Phantom.
