Over het museum
The archaeological museum occupies part of the so-called Temple of Diana, an ancient sanctuary enclosed within the Aix-les-Bains town hall. It is one of the three Roman temples in France that have survived intact. Its dedication remains uncertain: the name Diana dates from the Middle Ages, and the temple may have been dedicated to Borvo, the Celtic god of hot springs.
The collections of the former Lepic museum, founded in 1872, together with an important Gallo-Roman collection of stone monuments, were reinstalled here in 1948. They tell the story of the Roman vicus of Aquae, its organization and some of the families who lived there.
Hoogtepunten
- Roman temple integrated into the town hall
- Objects from the lakeside settlements of Lac du Bourget from the Final Bronze Age
- Marble torso of an emperor, probably portrayed as Hercules
- Religious, administrative and funerary inscriptions from the vicus of Aquae
Vaste collectie
- Collection archéologique du temple de Diane – Objects, statues and inscriptions telling the story of the Roman vicus of Aquae and its inhabitants.
