Over het museum
The Banassac archaeological museum opened in 1989, at the initiative of Gilbert Fages and the village’s archaeological association. It is housed in the town hall, next to the Saint-Médard church, and presents the results of excavations carried out in the commune.
During the first two centuries of our era, Banassac was an important center for the production of fine red pottery known as terra sigillata. Vessels from its workshops circulated across much of Europe. The museum displays these products and recalls the town’s role among the cities of the Gabales region, in what is now Lozère.
The display cases also evoke the Merovingian mint, whose coins bear the name of the place, as well as objects from the Chasséen Neolithic culture. Finds from a mausoleum, uncovered during the preventive excavations linked to the construction of the A75 motorway, complete the collection.
