Over het museum

Javols occupies the site of Anderitum, the capital of the Gabales, a Gaulish people whose territory roughly corresponds to today’s Lozère department. The town was founded shortly after the Roman conquest, in the Triboulin valley. Excavations began in 1828, after the discovery of a milestone that made it possible to locate the ancient city.

The site museum opened in August 1998 over two levels. It displays about 700 objects from nearly two centuries of research and explains the daily life of the inhabitants, their crafts (pottery, woodworking, house construction) and the methods of archaeologists. An interactive model traces the development of the town since its foundation, and full-size reconstructions, tactile displays and facsimiles complete the visit.

Outside the museum, a free-access route through the village leads to several excavation sites. It passes residential quarters, the former church, necropolises, the forum and the baths. The museum is run by the Communauté de communes des Hautes Terres de l’Aubrac.
