Over het museum
The museum was founded in the late 1980s at the initiative of the town of Graveson, the Region and the descendants of the painter Auguste Chabaud, who wanted to preserve and promote his work. It was initially run as an association. The foundation stone was laid in 1989 and the museum opened to the public in 1992. The large canvas “Les Olivades”, which had until then hung in the town hall, was moved here on that occasion.
From 1995 onward, a temporary exhibition was held every year and art-practice workshops were set up. In 1996, the exhibition devoted to the painter’s sculptural work showed all of his sculptures and glazed clay pieces for the first time. Concerts, lectures, readings and Museum Night also shape life at the museum.
In 2010 the museum became municipal. The façade was renovated, the building was extended, and the Graveson tourist office moved into the same walls. The rooms were redesigned in 2012, with wood panelling to make hanging the works easier. In 2019, the regional fund for acquiring Provençal works entrusted the museum with major works by the artist, representing his different periods.
