Over het museum
The Valence museum was officially founded in 1850. Since 1911 it has been housed in the former bishop's palace, a large townhouse in the historic centre next to the Saint-Apollinaire cathedral, on the edge of the city's first terrace. The building retains many traces of its history: a fortified episcopal tower from the 12th century, a pointed-arch gallery and painted ceilings from the 15th and 17th centuries. The museum offers a wide panoramic view over the Rhône valley, from the Vercors to the mountains of the Ardèche.
Its collections number more than 20,000 works and feature a renewed route from regional prehistory to contemporary art. The archaeology section tells the story of the civilisations that inhabited the Drôme and the middle Rhône valley, going back from the medieval period to prehistory, via the Roman colony of Valentia. It presents more than 1,500 objects, Latin inscriptions, models and a mosaic panel depicting The Labours of Hercules and Orpheus Charming the Animals.
The art section brings together paintings, drawings, sculptures and decorative arts, with landscape as its common thread: from its “invention” as an independent genre in the 16th century to its reinterpretation by contemporary artists. Its holdings include Flemish, Dutch, French and Italian schools, as well as Romantic and Realist works and pieces from the Barbizon school. The museum also holds a collection of 120 drawings and paintings by Hubert Robert, and works by artists such as Sophie Calle, Joan Mitchell, Simon Hantaï, Dufy and Derain. It organises temporary exhibitions, workshops and guided tours throughout the year.
