Over het museum
The Congregation of the Holy Spirit is a Catholic missionary society founded in France in 1703. Present in Africa since the beginning of the 19th century, it worked there for a long time, notably in Gabon, the Congo and the Central African Republic. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many Spiritan missionaries studied the languages and customs of the peoples they met and gathered objects in the field.
For more than a century, these objects were sent to France and dispersed across various congregation sites or brought together in small missionary museums. The restructuring of several of the congregation's sites made their conservation urgent. The idea of a new space open to the public was then born, to show the artistic and spiritual richness of African culture.
The museum opened in November 2018 in the Maison Saint-Joseph, an 18th-century château in the Italian style, enlarged in the 1930s. The 200 m² exhibition floor was designed by the firms NeM architectes and Gernay architectes. The collections come mainly from Gabon, Congo-Brazzaville and Congo-Kinshasa and include tools, seats, weapons, adornments, masks and statues linked to initiation rites, liturgy, and therapeutic or divinatory practices.
