Over het museum
The City of Cholet founded a history museum in 1977 and an art museum in 1979. The two institutions were brought together in 1993 in a new building that bears the “Musée de France” label.
The history section focuses on the Mauges and Vendée region. It deals in particular with the Vendée Wars between 1793 and 1796, the Battle of Cholet of October 17, 1793, and figures such as Cathelineau, Lescure, La Rochejaquelein, Charette and Bonchamps.
The art gallery brings together works from the 18th and 19th centuries, for example by Fragonard, Nattier and Maurice Denis, as well as 20th-century artists such as Albert Gleizes, Georges Valmier, Vasarely, Kupka and Aurélie Nemours. It also presents artists from the region. An interactive labyrinth from the 1960s, a work by the Groupe de recherche d'art visuel (GRAV), is a particular highlight of the visit.
The art museum reopened its reworked galleries in September 2026, including a new space devoted to contemporary art.
