Over het museum
After the Revolution, the archbishopric left Narbonne and the archbishops' palace lost its function. In 1833 the Commission archéologique et littéraire de Narbonne founded a library and a museum in the Palais Neuf, which occupies former archiepiscopal apartments fitted out from 1632. The museum opened to the public the following year with only two rooms. Its collections then mixed paintings, faience, sculptures, archaeology, coins, minerals and fossils.
From the 1840s the town bought the palace to house its town hall. Viollet-le-Duc directed major works there, especially on the façades, and the museum gradually gained new rooms. In the 1950s the archaeological collections were installed in the Palais Vieux, and the museum split into two routes: archaeology in the Palais Vieux, art in the Palais Neuf. Two rooms devoted to Orientalist painting were added in 1997 and 2000.
Today the art route occupies the third floor of the Palais Neuf. It brings together 17th- and 18th-century faience, European paintings from the 15th to the 20th century, furniture and an Orientalist section. The painted ceilings, such as those of the Salle des Audiences (1634), the Chambre du Roi (1632) and the Grande Galerie (1851), are also part of the visit. The archaeological route in the Palais Vieux has been closed since 2019; its antique collections joined the regional museum Narbo Via.
