Over het museum
Ensérune is a fortified Iron Age settlement founded around 575 BC on a hill with steep slopes, between Narbonne and Béziers. Ancient authors assign its territory to the Élysiques, and later to the Volques Tectosages. Its inhabitants mastered ironworking, pottery and glassmaking, and they minted silver coins.
For nearly five centuries the site traded with the Greek world, as shown by its black-glazed tableware. From 450 to 200 BC it was also closely linked with the Iberian world: more than 1,000 graffiti in Iberian script, scratched onto pottery, were found there, the most important European testimony to this language, which is still poorly understood. Around 200 BC, the rise of Rome and the Voie Domitienne, laid out at the foot of the hill, intensified exchanges. The creation of the Province of Narbonnaise brought the town into the Empire, and large Roman-style houses were built.
The archaeological museum displays more than 1,000 objects from antiquity. The site is placed within its territory and within the Mediterranean basin, between the Celtic world and the Iberian, Greek, Oriental, Etruscan and Roman worlds. Four zones, separated by glass partitions, each illustrate one civilization, supplemented by a map of cultural, economic and technical exchanges. The monument is managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux.
