Over het museum
The museum is housed in the Maison des Chevaliers, a medieval mansion dating back to the 12th century. For centuries it belonged to the Piolenc family, wealthy merchants of the Rhône valley. The building preserves a large royal court of justice, laid out around 1340, and two 15th-century reception rooms with painted ceilings decorated with coats of arms, exotic animals, fantastic creatures and scenes of everyday life.
The Gard department acquired the house in 1988. It was listed in its entirety as a historic monument in 1992, then restored between 1993 and 1995. The museum opened to the public in July 1995. Since July 2006, admission has been free.
Its approach is secular: it treats the sacred as a cultural phenomenon rather than as catechesis. The collections bring together objects from a variety of civilisations and periods, rarely seen together in a fine arts museum: for example a Romanesque Virgin, a soldier figurine from a Chinese tomb, an African mask and a Cretan icon. The museum helps visitors understand the meaning of these works. It is run by the Conservation départementale du Gard and holds the “Musée de France” label.
